download thunderbird 2How to I make thunderbird download emails by itself?

I recently downloaded ThunderBird (2.0.0.21) And It's worked OK so far.

Aside from the fact it "checks" for emails and doesn't download them.
A get a little icon in my sys tray that says "<email>Has 1 new message" But when I maximize T'bdownload thunderbird 2ird, there is nothing there. And I have to press "get mail" for the email/s to actually download. How do I fix this?.

Also how to I make it check all my emails at the same time. Rather then having to physically select "Get ALL mail"?

in every mail account select Server Settings
check the box Check for new messages every __ minutes
put the amount of minutes in the box
check the box Automatically download new messages
click OK
